IMS Research Reports iPads Exceed eBook Reader Volumes While New Entrants Strengthen Both Supply Chains

Publication Date: 27th September 2010

AUSTIN, TEXAS, September 28, 2010 – IMS Research has released the second issue of its Quarterly eBook and iPad Shipment and Forecast Service which provides actual shipments on eBook frontplanes, eBook displays, eBook readers, iPads and iPad displays along with a rolling 6-quarter forecast.

According to report author and IMS Research SVP Ross Young, “Q2’10 was a noteworthy quarter with Apple beginning iPad shipments and eBook reader brands changing their business model and pricing philosophy. The adoption of the Agency model meant eBooksellers no longer had to subsidize losses on eBook downloads with profits from high-priced eBook readers. As a result, eBook reader prices fell sharply towards the end of the quarter which was also supported by competition with the iPad and rising eBook frontplane and display inventories in the supply chain.”

Young also noted that Q2’10 was marked by the strengthening of both the eBook and iPad supply chains as new players entered. SiPix finally began shipping eBook frontplanes in volume, creating an alternative to E Ink. In addition, AUO started shipping eBook displays using SiPix frontplanes offering an alternative to E Ink Holdings (EIH) and LG Display. The report identifies 8 design wins for AUO and the entry of new OEMs. Apple also strengthened its iPad supply chain with Samsung becoming the 3rd panel supplier to the 9.7” version. The report also discusses the next iPad, naming two additional panel suppliers believed to be qualified.

Other highlights of the latest issue include:

  • In its first quarter in the market, Apple’s iPad shipments exceeded the combined volume of nearly 40 eBook reader suppliers with a 3.3 to 2.4M unit advantage.
  • eBook readers still had a strong quarter, up 28% Q/Q with even faster growth predicted for Q3’10. Both Amazon and Barnes & Noble took share with Sony, Hanvon and Hanlin losing ground.
  • In Q3’10, panel suppliers are expected to ship over 6M panels to Apple with Apple shipping over 5M iPads. For the year, we are expecting Apple to ship 15.6M iPad with 200% growth in 2011 to over 46M units.
  • eBook reader volumes are expected to rise 192% in 2010 to 13.1M units with 55% growth in 2011 to over 20M units. Panel price reductions are accelerating on rising price pressure.
  • Touch is expected to take off in the eBook reader market in 2011 as multi-touch becomes widely available. Color eBook readers should become available in early 2011, but penetration is not predicted to be as high as touch.
  • Despite SiPix and AUO’s entry, EIH still dominates and enjoyed record gross margins in Q2’10 on strong frontplane shipment growth.

The Quarterly eBook and iPad Shipment and Forecast Service tracks and forecasts eBook frontplane, display, reader, iPad and iPad display shipments by supplier by size. For more information on this report, please visit www.fpdmarketresearch.com or contact Nicole.Juarez@imsresearch-usa.com.
